Changing from summer to winter tires (and vice versa) is crucial to be safe and comfortable on the road in any season. In Belgium, where the weather can change quickly, the right tires ensure optimal grip and performance. But why is a tire change so important, and when is it time to change your tires?
Why change tires?
Safety
Winter tires are specially designed for cold conditions and offer more grip at temperatures below 7°C. They have a softer rubber compound and a special tread that better disperses water and snow. In summer, however, these tires become less effective because they wear out faster and offer less grip on warm asphalt. Summer tires, on the other hand, perform optimally at temperatures above 7°C.
Fuel Economy
The right tire for the right season can help reduce fuel consumption. Summer tires roll more efficiently on dry and warm surfaces, while winter tires offer more resistance on warm surfaces. This not only saves you fuel costs, but also contributes to lower CO2 emissions.
Extended life of your tires
By driving the right tires each season, you extend the life of your tires. For example, a winter tire / four-season tire will wear out faster in the summer due to their slightly softer rubber compound. So by choosing the combination of summer and winter tires, you get the maximum life out of your tires.
When should you switch?
- Winter tires: Install them when the temperature structurally drops below 7°C. Usually this is between October and December.
- Summer tires: Change back as soon as spring temperatures return to structurally above 7°C, often starting in April.
Also keep in mind the legal obligations abroad. In countries such as Germany and Austria, winter tires are mandatory during the winter months.
