Changing your caravan tires

Changing your tire is not only necessary when you have a flat tire. Making sure you are always safe and comfortable on the road is our first priority. You should have your tires checked if:

The profile is worn out

A sure sign that it is time to replace your caravan tires is when the tread is worn out. Your tread provides excellent grip and the necessary water drainage on wet roads. Especially with a full load, your caravan or motorhome will benefit from having a deep tread.

TIP: Although the legal minimum for tread depth is 1.6 mm, we recommend a minimum of 3 mm. A convenient way to check this is with a 1 euro coin. Place the edge of the coin in your tread. Is the gold edge not visible? Good news, your band is fine! If the gold edge shows up, it’s time for new tires.

They older than six years

Even if they still look good, it is wise to replace them if your tires are older than 6 years. This is because the rubber in your tires gets a lot to endure; after 6 years, the rubber begins to “dry out,” dramatically reducing grip. A caravan is often in direct sunlight. These UV rays have an adverse effect on the rubber of your tires and can cause them to need replacement sooner. If your caravan is in storage, there are also risks with long periods of inactivity. In the summer, the rubber can dry out and during the winter deformation can occur. The full weight and downtime can cause a flattened underside, also known as “square tires. A simple solution to this is to move the caravan every month. Theoretically easy, in practice we realize all too well that this hardly ever happens.

TIP: If you want to know when the tire was produced, you can find the DOT code on the sidewall of your tire. The last 4 digits are the production date expressed as the week and year of production. If it says 3919 on the tire, it was produced in week 39 of 2019.

Tips for choosing new tires

For a comfortable and safe trip, the right tires are a must. At Tires Michel, we help you make the best choice with a few helpful tips.

Need advice?
At Tires Michel, we are happy to help you find the perfect tire for your driving style and needs.

Sufficient carrying capacity

The carrying capacity of tires is very important with caravans. Make sure you choose tires that can carry the maximum allowable weight of your caravan. This includes all your gear. Tires with extra load capacity prevent dangerous situations and tire failures. No idea which tire to choose? Our experts are happy to help you select tires with the right load capacity.

Proper tire pressure

Correct tire pressure is important not only for safety, but also for the life of your tires. Underinflated or overinflated tires can lead to uneven wear, reduced grip and even tire failures. Another disadvantage of too low pressure in your caravan’s tires is that your car will have to work (/tug) harder to pull the caravan forward. This will result in much higher fuel consumption. We are happy to advise you on the correct pressure for your caravan, tailored to the type of tire and the load of your caravan.

Choose your tire size

On your tires is the tire size. It can be found on the sidewall of your current tires and consists of a series of numbers and letters that give information about the size and capacity. This information comes in a concatenation that looks something like this: 140/70 R13 86N

  • 140: width of the tire in mm
  • 70: height ratio in % to width (70% of 140mm)
  • R: R stands for radial and D stands for diagonal. These should never alternate on the same axis.
  • 13: diameter of the wheel
  • 86: LI or load index says how much weight a tire can carry (86 = 530 kg)
  • N: the speed index or speed code expresses maximum permissible speed (N = 140 km/h)

Now that you know what information is on the tire, you can more easily make a decision in which new tire to choose. Still not completely clear? Come by and one of our mechanics will be happy to help you further.

The difference between caravan tires and car tires

Caravan tires and car tires may look similar, but there are major differences. Caravan tires are specifically designed to support the unique requirements of a caravan. For example, they must have a higher load-bearing capacity to support the extra weight of the caravan. They are also often made of a firmer rubber compound to prevent drying out and cracking, something more common in caravans that have been stationary for long periods.
