Tire wear in RV tires
The profile
A sure sign that it’s time to replace your RV tires is when the tread is worn out. With a good tread, you will enjoy optimal grip in challenging conditions. Water drainage is also an important factor. Do you like to hit the road carefree and safe? Then checking your tires is one of the best ways to ensure a successful vacation.
TIP: Although the legal minimum for tread depth is 1.6 mm, we recommend a minimum of 3 mm. A convenient way to check this is with a 1 euro coin. Place the edge of the coin in your tread. Is the gold edge not visible? Good news, your band is fine! If the gold edge shows up, it’s time for new tires.
Wear from downtime and UV damage
An RV is often in direct sunlight. These UV rays have an adverse effect on the rubber of your tires and can cause them to need replacement sooner. If your RV is in storage, there are also risks with long idle periods. In summer, the rubber can dry out and during winter, deformation can occur. Due to the full weight and downtime, you may suffer from a flattened bottom, also known as “square tires.

Replacement after six years
Even if they still look good, it is wise to replace tires if they are older than 6 years. This is because your tires may experience small cracks or other damage. As a result of this age, the risk of a blowout is significantly increased. The aging of the rubber is regardless of the number of miles driven in recent years. Therefore, it is always wise to keep good track of the production date of your tires.
TIP: If you want to know when the tire was produced, you can find the DOT code on the sidewall of your tire. The last 4 digits are the production date expressed as the week and year of production. If it says 3919 on the tire, it was produced in week 39 of 2019.

Which brand of tires to choose for your RV?
At Tires Michel, we offer a wide range of brands known for their quality and reliability. Brands such as Michelin, Continental and Goodyear offer special RV tires designed to meet the high demands of RVs. These all have higher payloads and stability, even at high speeds and challenging road conditions. These brands continually invest in technologies to minimize wear and maximize fuel efficiency for long trips. Also looking for the right tire for your RV adventure? Carrying capacity
It is critical that you select tires that can support the full weight of your RV, including all equipment and personal belongings. Tires designed specifically for RVs offer increased load capacity. They are extra reinforced for the higher weight. Using these specific RV tires helps reduce risks such as blowouts and other dangerous situations. This way, you will leave on your trip carefree.
Proper tire pressure
Proper tire pressure keeps you safe on the road. It also contributes to the life of your tires. If your tire pressure is too high or too low, it can cause wear, reduced grip and breakdowns on the road. Underinflated tires also increase fuel consumption, a waste of money in our opinion. We are happy to advise you on the correct pressure for your RV, tailored to the type of tire and weight of your RV.
Choose your tire size
You can easily read the tire size on your current tires. It can be found on the sidewall or flanks and consists of a series of numbers and letters that give information about the size and capacity. This information comes in a concatenation that looks something like this: 235/65R16 115/113S
- 235: width of the tire in mm
- 65: height ratio to width (= 65% of 235mm)
- R: R stands for radial and D stands for diagonal. These should never alternate on the same axis.
- 16: diameter of the rim in inches
- 115/113: LI or load index says how much weight a tire can carry (115 = 1215kg, 113 = 1150kg). For double cotering, the first number represents the load capacity when the tire is single mounted. The second number represents the load capacity when double mounted. Double mounting is always at the rear of the motorhome and means that there are 4 tires mounted on the axle.
- S: the speed index or speed code expresses maximum permissible speed (S = 180 km/h)
With this information you can easily order new tires at Banden Michel or make an appointment. Still not entirely clear? Come by and one of our mechanics will be happy to help you.

The difference between RV tires and regular car tires
Motorhome tires and car tires may look similar, yet they are vastly different. Motorhome tires are specifically designed to support the unique and high demands of a mobile home. For example, they must have a higher load-bearing capacity to support the extra weight of the RV. They are also made of a firmer rubber compound to prevent drying out and cracking. This way, your tires stay in good condition longer.
