What types of tires for vans are there?

When you drive a van, the right tires are essential for both safety and efficiency. Depending on your needs and the conditions in which you drive, you can choose from different types and types. Each type has its own unique features and benefits.

Van tires – Summer tires

Summer tires are ideal for use in warmer months (late March to October). They offer excellent performance on both dry and wet roads, thanks to their special rubber compound and tread pattern. These tires are designed to provide good grip and stability in higher temperatures. For high-mileage drivers in the summer, these are the ideal tires for your van.

Van tires – Winter tires

Winter tires, in turn, are best for the colder months. They are made of a softer type of rubber that remains flexible in low temperatures, and have deep grooves and fine sipes for extra grip on slippery surfaces. These tires provide greater safety and control during the winter months. Especially with heavy use and heavier loads, these are the best van tires from October to March.

Van tires – All-season tires

For vans driving no more than 15,000 miles per year, all-season or four-season tires are a good compromise. They are designed to provide year-round performance in moderate weather conditions. Although they do not offer the specialized performance of summer or winter tires, they are a practical solution for people who do not use their van intensively.

The differences between van tires and car tires

Although van tires and car tires may look similar, there are important differences that affect performance, safety and load capacity. Van tires are primarily designed to carry heavier loads so they continue to perform, even at maximum load, without deformation. They are also made of a firmer rubber compound and usually have a higher tension. This ensures low rolling resistance, longer life, as well as in a slightly stiffer ride. In addition, tread patterns and sidewall structures have been modified and reinforced to withstand the challenges of daily commercial use.

Important factors determining your choice

When choosing the right tires for your van, there are a number of things to consider. It’s more than just a matter of finding the right size. Below we discuss three important factors that can influence your choice:

Driving style and habits

Your driving style greatly affects the kind of tires you need. Do you often drive in the city with lots of short distances, or do you make long trips on the highway? Depending on your preference, it is best to choose van tires that perform optimally at high speeds, or are more suitable for heavily loaded driving.

Usage and distances

The distances you travel and the type of loads you carry are also important. For vans used for heavy loads and long distances, we recommend tires designed for durability and stability. For lighter loads and shorter trips, there are other options suitable for less intensive use.

Climate

In a country like Belgium with a temperate climate where the seasons change greatly, we recommend changing between summer and winter tires. Especially when carrying loads and intensive use, this will have a great impact on fuel efficiency and your safety. If you do not use your van intensively or professionally and do not go abroad, then cheap van tires or all-season tires can be a solution.

Determine which band you are using now

It is important to know what type of tires you are currently using, especially if you are satisfied with their performance. Check the marking with the size, brand, and type (summer, winter, or all-season). This information helps us suggest a similar or improved option for you. If you’re not sure how to find this information, stop by. We will be happy to help you.

Replace your van tires on time

Replacing your van tires on time is a must for your safety. Worn tires reduce your grip on the road and increase the risk of accidents, especially on wet roads. Watch for signs of wear, such as worn treads, profile depth or cracks in the sidewall. If you see any of these signs, then it’s time for replacement. A good time is at your monthly check of your tire pressure.

TIP: Although the legal minimum for tread depth is 1.6 mm, we recommend a minimum of 3 mm. A convenient way to check this is with a 1 euro coin. Place the edge of the coin in your tread. Is the gold edge not visible? Good news, your band is fine! If the gold edge shows up, it’s time for new tires.
