When do I install my winter tires?
What month should you change to winter tires? How cold should it be? On this page you will find more information about the perfect time to fit winter tires.

Temperature below 7 °C

Much depends, of course, on the weather. Winter tires reach their maximum performance as soon as the temperature drops below 7°C. So you can take this temperature as a good yardstick. In Belgium, this means that you can fit your winter tires from approximately October to the end of March.

Be timely

On the one hand, you can reason that you effectively wait until the moment when the temperature drops below 7° C. Here, of course, you also run the risk that unforeseen winter weather (snow) may surprise you. At this time, of course, everyone wants winter tires on their car and there is a chance that the queue to get a spot for your change will be a bit longer.

What else should be taken into account? In the weather forecast, one usually talks about the average daily temperature. For example, on November 9, Mr. Deboosere predicts us a wet day with an average of 9 °C. Many people drive to work in the morning when the temperature is nowhere near 9 °C. So ideally, in this case, you would have placed your winter tires a little earlier.

It will always be difficult to fix the ideal moment for your winter tires. Especially in Belgium, with its extremely predictable climate ;-). We like to apply the golden rule: rather a little too early, than just a little too late.

Of course, we do not mean by this that you have to install your winter tires in September (because this would not be good for the wear of your tires). We mean by this that if you install your winter tires 2 weeks – on paper too early – this will not have a detrimental effect on your wear and tear and you can avoid the queue because of this.
