When should you replace car tires?
Replacing tires because of wear and tear
Over time, every tire will wear out. Due to acceleration, braking and cornering, a minuscule amount of rubber always disappears. As a result, tread depth decreases.
In Europe, there is a minimum tread depth of 1.6 mm. If it is less, you must replace the tire.
You can easily check tread depth yourself using wear indicators. These are small elevations in the tread grooves. As long as they are not flush with the tread of the tire, you can hit the road carefree.
PS: There are also analog and digital tire tread gauges to perform this check.
Tires replaced because of defects
It is a good idea to check tires regularly for damage such as:
- A hump or bulge on the side
- A crack under which the steel wires of the carcass are visible
- Screws or nails embedded in the tread
- Unusual or uneven wear
To ensure your safety, it is recommended to schedule a repair or replacement in the above cases.
Replacing tires due to aging
Did you already know that tires have a lifespan? Moisture, temperature changes and Uv rays affect the rubber, causing it to darken.
Therefore, we recommend replacing tires after 6 to 8 years, even if the tread still seems good.
Check for yourself how old a tire is by its DOT number. This number indicates the date of manufacture. It is the 4 digits on the sidewall (in an oval). For example, the DOT number 3221 indicates that the tire was produced in the 32nd week of 2021.
