Why are winter tires oh-so-important?
Winter tires, so much has already been written, told, tested, proven, ... And yet today we still hear drivers telling us: 'winter tires, I don't need that, because I can drive the car hear'.

Braking distance and safety

And we believe these drivers quite well, yet we would like to make another plea for the use of winter tires. It would be a shame to park your nice car against a tree on a sunny winter day, wouldn’t it?

And THAT is precisely why winter tires are “oh-so” important: safety. Not only your safety is increased by using winter tires, also that of all other road users (co-drivers, cyclists, pedestrians,…). From a temperature of 7°C and colder, good winter tires perform vastly better than summer tires. And by perform better we also mean effectively perform better, some facts at a glance:

  • Braking distance decreases dramatically, the higher the speed, the greater the difference.

  • Cornering grip increases by 30%.

  • Winter tires are not necessarily more expensive than summer tires.

Sometimes people refer to winter tires as “snow tires. This is not entirely accurate. Even in dry conditions or rain, winter tires perform better than summer tires below +7°C.

Why is it that winter tires perform better?

Quite simply, winter tires are composed of a softer type of rubber and the tread is made up of deeper grooves and multiple “sipes. The softer rubber type ensures that winter tires remain flexible even in cold conditions and adhere more easily to the road.

The deep grooves allow space for snow to collect, it may sound strange, but nothing has as much grip on snow … as snow itself. The more snow remains on the tire, the more grip on snow. This is also what the “sipes” are for; they grip the snow, so to speak. You can compare it to the snowball you make when you make a snowman. When you roll it through the snow, it gets bigger and bigger because the snow “sticks” together.

All-season tires also have certain winter tire properties.
